In 2016 Redruth hosted Inland Art Festival for the second time – the first having been in 2014 – a “contemporary Art Festival, bringing diverse communities together in a historic town. I worked on this event for two days in the set-up and one of the live festival days which allowed me to gain a range of skills, knowledge and understanding of how the event was put into place. There were a large range of jobs to do throughout the process, however my main focuses were: décor, signage and stewarding.

In this process, I was able to focus on the small details which can make each venue unique and yet still fitting with the overall theme and intentions of the event working with a range of artists to help collaborate with them to provide the perfect setting for their work. Throughout the set-up on the week before the event there was an opportunity to meet new people, network and learn exactly what it is that artists expect from this type of event, and the importance of keeping any Stakeholders aware and happy at all times. It was interesting to work on a larger scaled community and art event as there was a lot more interaction with the general public, so when stewarding it was important to be aware of any information that you may be asked.

From this process, I learned the importance of having a team of dedicated and hardworking volunteers as not every member of the team was as dedicated as they could have been, which although didn’t have too large an effect on the overall event did make the day to day set up more of a challenge. I felt as though I was able to work on my initiative, problem solving and volunteer management through my actions, and watching the team around me.
